Carpenter Bee in flight

Hi All

Following on from my Dragonfly in flight here is another subject. Carpenter bee on foraging trip.

And to prove it was not a spoof here is a differen species of Carpenter Bee at the same shrubbery area

Incidently both are very cropped from the original frame.

Cracking shots, can you tell me what equipment you used for these?
I need to find the time to try and practise more, i have got pretty decent equipment but don't have enough hours in the day to get some practise in.

Just curious what:

ISO
Shutter Speed

PS

Watermark has been removed so please feel free to upload to the gallery.

Dragonfly, Carpenter Bee's

WOW! Another great shot, we "need" information on how you captured these insects in flight, set-up etc. Keep them coming in.

Thanks guys glad you liked them.

I will have to check the EXIF but these bees were taken on my old 350D and 55-200 lens - NB The AI Servo on this body stinks so these were 'one shot' mode.

I will get back in a while with the EXIF info.

Oh for the record I rarely use a tripod i.e. 99% of my stuff is taken handheld.

As for practice, well more modern kit has aided me especially digital in the past few years but my "nickname" is chosen for reason

Just goes to show you don't need the best of the best to get great photos.

Cheers for that, since i got the 5D i seem to be having issues unless its very bright or i use flash i have to put the ISO to 400.

Do you shoot most of your shots in TV thats the setting i use for most of mine but am trying to move over to manual.

Hi Steve

Without checking the extended EXIF all I can tell you is that in the main, 90% of the time, I use Av as I like to have greater control over the DoF whilst keeping an eye on the shutter speed. I find I have gotten lazy over the years and tend to trust (?) the metering incamera but having said that as the mantra is 'histogram' to the right I have found both the 350D and the 40D underexpose by about 1/3 of a stop so I dialin a 1/3 to compensate. Obviously for BIF against bright skies I rack that up anything form +2/3 to + 2 (the same rule of thumb applies to my other favourite subject aircraft) Note I really have no favourites and will point my lens at almost anything apart people (family being the exception).

I always check the histogram and will adjust to suit, prefering natural light whenever possible but sometimes a splash of fill-flash gives a lift.

:)

PS I note you have the 100-400, I hired that for when I went to Farnborough airshow this year here are my links http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...ht=farnborough and http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...ht=farnborough and http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...ht=farnborough when I can justify a new lens the 100-400 will very high up the list.

Some cracking photos you got there, i was going to try and get down to the air show in Scotland but could not make it. I will take your advice and give it ago, i am the same i really don't like to take photos of people not sure why apart from family thats as far as i go.

AV i tend have issues with the shutter speed being too slow for hand held when i try to increase the dof.

Again i need to practise both more.
