Cats Vs Garden Birds

Hallo

I have read cat owners say they are responsible with their pet cat. It has come to my attention that the best way garden birds are protected from the feline threat is for the said moggie to be fitted with a bell on its' collar, thus rendering the cats stealth useless. I personally don't like cats but i know a lot of people do, i think it would be the best way to save garden birds from becoming a toy for the cat to play with.

Hi Greeny

Welcome to the forum. This is always a hot topic as people love both cats and birds and i think you have a valid point.

I don't own a cat but my mother in law does. Her house is located at the bottom of a large hill and she has had a cat for many years. The cat itself i would not class as a domestic cat, ie it spends most of its time going up the hill hunting for anything it can get mice, rodents etc etc. It has killed a few birds in its time and some people would argue and say this is nature taking its course nothing more than a predator catching its prey? The cat has been wearing a bell on its collar for the last few years now, cannot guarantee its stoped the cat killing birds but not seen any brought home.

But i would say that pulling bells on collars would help save a lot of birds from the paws of cats.

PS i seen on springwatch that Bill was talking about cats not having the skills passed down anymore of how to give the killer blow/bite etc so cats are still catching but not being able to finish the prey off.

Re: Cats Vs Garden Birds

Due to having seen birds fledging in my garden i decided to invest in a cat scarer, the first one i bought did not work very well as i seen cats walking by it constantly like there was nothing there. I went out and bought a replacment unit which had a built in waterpsrayer, like a water pistol. If you want to keep cats out your garden i would recommend them.

This is the one i got, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bermuda-Pest-Patr ... .m14.l1318
