I tend to get mine from Lidil as they seem to be very cheap and the birds like the hanging balls of food. I tend to buy the strings and hang them directly from the trees and then get seeds etc for the actual feeders i have.

Steve,
I 'm lucky enough to have access to a pet cash & carry, so the bird food is reasonably cheap. However , I tend to make up my own mix, which the birds go nuts for.I can usually get 30+ birds within minutes of putting it down. The mix is as follows:-

Premium bird seed, including nijer seed, sunflower seed etc
Equal ammount of partly crushed peanuts
some dried grated cheese
mixed chopped and dried fruit
some bread crumbs
meal worms / waxworms

into this melt some lard, and beef suet, and mix well.

This can then be rolled into balls, or placed in a lined baking tray, and allowed to set. This can then be pushed into tree bark,or broken and scattered aroound.

Works a treat.

Rob

Cheers Rob might give your mix a try myself. My new bird table is attracting a lot of different birds.
